Elon Musk’s view on Artificial Intelligence
In a conference held in Texas on 11th March 2018, CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk said that Artificial intelligence was more dangerous than nuclear warheads as the predictions and possibilities are unknown to most people. Tesla is one of those companies leading in the field of AI through self-driving electric transport.
Just some time back, Tesla had claimed to be sending fully electric and self-driven cargo trucks on American roads. “I’m very close to the cutting edge in AI and it scares the hell out of me,” he said during the conference. AI is the key to many countless possibilities in the future, but it is another thing that metaphorically sounds threatening to jobs and mankind itself. Elon Musk also went ahead to acknowledge this danger to the public and asked for a governing body to oversee all kinds of AI projects, so this way any threats could be regulated.
On many occasions, the technocrat has expressed his concerns over the unregulated progress of Artificial Intelligence. In order to work alongside machines, Musk said that the advent of AI should be symbiotic with humanity.
Degree of truth
John McCarthy, also known as the father of AI or Artificial Intelligence was awarded the Turing award in 1976 for his work in promoting Artificial Intelligence. He and countless others who have developed AI were rewarded for contribution in automating machines to work alongside humans. Artificial Intelligence is no more the technology of the future and we have achieved great milestones in the field. This is where Elon Musk pointed out the possibilities of the future unknown to present developers. Although it is highly unlikely that we put the government and population management in a robot’s hands, AI transparently threatens countless jobs. Musk also spoke about Google’s progress in AI development called AlphaGo which in a short duration of 6 months was able to learn and defeat the world champion in a Chinese board game.
Is Elon Musk Right About the Danger?
While it is still debatable whether machines can get smarter than humans, there is no threat as of this moment from Artificial Intelligence. We are quickly progressing in this field yet there have numerous setbacks along the way where the communications between AI was not understandable. Although it sounds corny that you would be confused by the thing you created, there have never been signs of machines being able to dominate human beings. And it is still the strong belief of many experts in AI that machines could never get smarter than humans and nobody is going to create Frankenstein’s Monster.
Elon Musk stated that those who believe that AI can’t get smarter than us are fundamentally flawed and he himself is horrified by its possibilities. He compared AI to a nuclear warhead and strongly stated that it is not something anybody should be allowed to make. He also talked about World war patterns in the past and said that it would be a dark age if we end up having a third one.
