AI can make wonderful contributions to society
One such contribution can be done through crime fighting. But turning AI into a fortune teller is not a wise use of the technology. Two researchers are trying to do just that. They want to use artificial intelligence to predict where crime will rise next.
Not just any crime but corruption.
People are tired of government corruption officials
If AI could help cut down on corruption it would be a good thing. Government officials in many countries have used their power to enrich themselves and their families. Mostly at the expense of those who can least afford to pay.
It is a problem that may need the assistance of AI but not in a fortune teller type capacity. To stop corruption, law enforcement needs hard evidence, not predictive analysis.
The weakness of this venture
In looking at the data, it is very difficult to claim that this research has any real strengths. It does have quite a few weaknesses though.
First, the predictive nature of this application does not confirm that corruption will actually take place. It only suggests that the possibility of corruption is high.
Second, the variables used to identify this possible corruption also point to a strengthening economy. Will this AI technology be able to determine the difference?
Third, the AI technology, in this case, is not telling us anything we do not already know. Everyone knows that when money is made corruption can increase.
Fourth, there is nothing new in the political analysis of the data either. Everyone also knows that the longer people stay in office, the higher the chances of their becoming corrupt increases.
These are the 4 main weaknesses of this application of AI technology.
The Main Problem
With its weaknesses comes a very big problem. This application of AI technology may falsely point the finger at innocent people. The fact remains that honest politicians remain in power for long periods of time. Just like their corrupt counterparts.
It is also another fact that honest businessmen and others invest in real estate, start businesses and other ventures to make money. Placing everyone in the same category may ruin innocent and honest people through a variety of means. False accusations will inflict harm on reputations.
So, we must ask, how will this AI technology be able to tell the difference between the dishonest, corrupt people and the honest, innocent people?
Relying on the past is not always smart
The researchers relied on past cases to apply their idea to AI technology. But that is misusing the data. It also makes the research a bit biased as it only focuses on influencing AI to predict corruption.
This research does nothing to protect the innocent or the economy. Questions remain, must we have a stagnant economy to stop corruption? Or must innocent people remain poor because there is a possibility of corruption?
The research does not address these issues and it should.
