Turing Machine or Mighty Machines

I propose to consider the question, ‘Can machines think? it was once said by Alan Turing, one of the greatest computer scientist, who changed the entire World War II. Like many other scientists, Turing was also considered another psycho who loved machines and talked about their thinking abilities. But in recent past, we have realized the importance of this question and I ask this question again, Can machines think? and this time the answer is most probably “yes”, and it’s been proved.

Humans have natural intelligence and we utilize it in solving problems, similarly, AI has the ability to perceive its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. The goal of artificial intelligence is to create a technology that allows computers to function intelligently, here intelligent means that a machine which can basically think like a human which can set goals and achieve them, it should also learn and improve the algorithm from experience. AI is a vast field and it can be utilized in almost every field dated till now.

According to Forbes 2017 list of companies which are leading in the AI research is Google’s Deepmind, OpenAI, Facebook, Baidu Research, Microsoft Research. Turing once said that “A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human”, Google’s Deepmind is the company which has made it possible probably that’s why Deepmind is currently a leader in AI Research.

In 2016 Deepmind’s computer program, AlphaGo defeated a professional Go player. AlphaZero a more advanced program, defeated the most powerful program playing go, chess using reinforcement learning after few hours of playing against itself. The programs are based upon a neural network created by the company on the basis of Turing Machine. The aim of Deepmind is to push the boundaries of AI, developing programs that can learn to solve any complex problem without needing to be taught ‘How’. Deepmind is conducting research in the healthcare sector as well. Deepmind’s WaveNet, deep neural network for generating raw audio waveforms is currently being used by Google’s Assistant.

OpenAI founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman is a non-profit artificial intelligence research company, Musk characterizes AI as humanity’s biggest existential threat. OpenAI’s founders structured

it as a non-profit so that they could focus its research on creating a positive long-term human impact. It is being funded by companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Infosys etc. The company believes in the fact that ‘The best way to predict the future is to invent it’.

Baidu Research is also a leading AI research company it focuses on deep learning, speech recognition and synthesis, natural language understanding.

Another tech giant Microsoft is also not behind in AI Research, it will include AI features in its search engine Bing, which means Bing can make better use of object recognition, machine reading. It will also have more advanced auto-complete feature thanks to Microsoft’s natural language bots like Xiaoice and Zo. Bing will also have a better image search, trained on object recognition models. Microsoft is planning to bring intelligent search in Office 365 as well.

Scientists, like Stephen Hawking, believes that if advanced AI gains the ability to re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate, an unstoppable “intelligence explosion” could lead to human extinction. Keeping in mind the fact OpenAI is working in the direction to provide a long-term positive impact of AI on humans. Google’s Deepmind created DeepMind Ethics & Society because they believe that AI can be of extraordinary benefit to the world, but only if held to the highest ethical standards.
