Cars that drive themselves – A better idea
On paper, it sounds like a great idea. An automated police car that will protect law enforcement officers. This protection will come in the form of keeping police officers from being hit by oncoming traffic as they issue tickets. It may also stop officers from being baited by speeders then shot by the occupants of the speeding car. If these two reasons are the motivating factor behind the development. Then AI may make a very positive contribution to society.
Another good idea
Protecting the police officer is a great idea but there is a positive reverse side to this coin. Protection of innocent citizens from over-zealous or bad cops. By developing an automated police car, Ford may be able to help stop a traffic stop from escalating into a race shooting.
The automated police car may contribute to the easing of racial tension and keep nerves out of the situation. The police will not have to worry about hidden guns. The public will not have to worry about those police officers who have itchy trigger fingers.
While Ford has filed a patent, it is not promising to develop this positive use of AI intelligence. The patent is merely designed to protect the idea from their competitors. This is understandable, but this employment of AI technology may be a win-win for all involved. If it is developed correctly.
The K.I.S.S. principle (keep it simple, stupid) would have to apply. Any overthinking of this development may ruin its practical and valuable contribution. The design would have to have protection for constitutional rights programmed into the AI police car.
The application of this car is a good idea. Sadly, the problem is, FORD is a business. Like all businesses, FORD is a business to make money. The pursuit of the development of this car may solely rely on how much of a profit Ford will gain.
AI should not be a prisoner to business interests
It is not that businesses should be deprived of the ability to make money. There are just some scenarios, like the automated police car, where money and profits should not enter the conversation.
AI technology can be a good thing if used properly. The automated police car has many good possibilities if it is allowed to be developed. Protecting innocent lives should be the watchword of all.
Who wants to see police officers, most are family men, run down because one motorist hates cops? Or who wants to see them gunned down just because they did a routine traffic stop? Or vice versa? Who wants regular citizens injured or killed because a police officer made a decision based on bad judgment?
AI can make a good contribution
There are numerous articles out there talking about the negative applications of AI. Here is an application that will be positive for everyone if the bigger picture is properly analyzed.
There is nothing wrong with putting limitations on AI robots and keep their programming limited to the positive tasks they need to handle.
