We need to get serious about AI
We need to look at the bigger picture before claiming it is the next best thing to sliced bread. There are those AI supporters who act more like cheerleaders than they do rational businessmen or scientists.
These cheerleaders only look at the claimed positive applications. They ignore the negative effects that a wide application of AI technology will also bring. Right now, some of these cheerleaders are advocating the educational potential of AI technology.
In some aspect, AI could be a good partner for the traditional university. AI would enhance university education, that is a given. These positive applications might make the university the place to be once again.
The positive applications
One way that AI technology contributes to a university education act is through costs. These new avenues can and do reduce the cost of attending a traditional academic institution. Another way AI contributes is by allowing more students access to top professors.
Instead of traveling great distances to attend a university, AI would bring the university to the student electronically. Distance Education is already laying the groundwork for this. Another contribution would be seen through scheduling of classes.
A student would not have to give up profitable employment to attend. They arrange their own study & lecture schedule. Again, this is something already being done by Distance Education. This is all good for older students but not so much for the younger students.
The negative applications
Not many people, including AI cheerleaders, want to look at the negative side of the issue. These are usually very depressing. The impact of AI technology is not limited to universities and their staff.
There are a lot of other people who would be affected by the shut down of universities. To start, there would be all the sports teams and the vendors who serve their needs. Those employees would be out of work.
The business that those people support would see a decrease in revenue, placing more employees out of work. Textbook companies would lose out on revenue, as would other university support businesses. The list can go on. The negative side of AI technology as applied to universities would be devastating.
A possible solution
Some billionaires have suggested that a universal income is established and funded from the revenue received AI technology. They give this fund a fancy name, but in reality, it is simply a welfare system.
No one likes welfare, yet it may be forced on a majority of the world’s population. Some of whom may see it as a rise in their income. Others will see it as humiliating, embarrassing, degrading and so on. Especially men who like to take care of their families.
Some Final Words
In looking at the bigger picture, two things come to mind to describe the push towards AI education. One, it looks like the elite has found a way to control the world’s population. Two, why educate the people if there are no jobs waiting for them?
AI will make a university education moot.
