AI is a double-edged sword
As AI technology develops nations are going to look to it to provide an advantage over their enemies. For some countries, an offense is their intended goal. They want to use AI to fuel their expansion efforts.
For other countries, like India Japan, they are looking to AI to protect their borders, their people and to stop those ambitious nations. Then when conflicting territorial claims mar international relations, AI is being looked to in order to help solve the problem.
AI can make long distance nations allies
In strengthening one’s advantage over a common enemy, AI can help bridge the gap of distance. Japan and India are thousands of miles apart. Yet AI is helping them to work together as China encroaches on their traditional territory.
Not only will AI enhance communication between the two nations, it will also help them to work together. The two countries can share advances in AI development, combine resources to develop unmanned military vehicles and much more.
The two countries want to make sure their military has either an advantage over China or stay on par with them.
It isn’t just physical territory
China is focusing on its economic power and using AI to their full advantage. The country has received financial support, to the tune of about $8 billion, to develop its economic wing.
China wants to be both an economic and military power in the region and that has made both India and Japan, sit up and take notice. Not wanting to lose out to China’s rise, AI development is being utilized to maintain the two countries position in the region.
This is the power of AI
At least that is what is hoped. AI is now being seen as a tool to foster peace among different nations. The common goals of peace and prosperity unite people and countries. They see that they cannot achieve what they desire alone. They need help and AI technology is providing that aid.
It is a good thing that there is a second edge to the AI sword. If there wasn’t then we would not see this rise in cooperation between nations. The peaceful edge of the sword can keep nations from being vulnerable to the advances of their more aggressive neighbors.
It is natural
For nations to employ new technology in defense of their country. It is also natural to see them use it to gain a military advantage over their neighbors or other nations around the globe.
We should not be surprised to see the development of the military edge that comes with AI technology. But that development should not hinder the other edge of the sword. In the 1960s and 70’s the hippies had a slogan- make love, not war.
While their efforts and methods were a bit naïve, maybe AI technology will help nations develop an attitude of peace and downplay the military edge that AI brings to the world. We can only hope.
