Sophia, a humanoid robot, is the latest creation of Dr. David Hanson, a founder of Hanson Robotics. Defying the conventional looks of a robot, she embodies the classic beauty of Audrey Hepburn. The porcelain skin with a slender nose, high cheekbone, and expressive eyes, makes her look elegant. She is as self-aware as a human. She can express and understand human speech. She wants to work alongside human for a better future. To help AI developers, the company has also introduced SingualrityNET as the only protocol to access the AI on demand. SingularityNET is a proposed blockchain based market-place where AI to AI communication, transaction, and market discovery would be readily available. Like Sophia, this is also the first protocol for AI sharing. Through SingularityNET & blockchain tokens, the entire world can connect through Sophia and monetize AI.
Sophia’ development was not instantaneous; it is the well-precaution creation of years. The Artificial Intelligence developer Dr. David Hanson believes, surely “fake human” can trigger revulsion but at the same time can help us understand social intelligence, both scientifically and artistically. With this view, the company endeavored to have a realistic robot that embodies social responsibility and aesthetic refinement. Prior to Sophia, the company has developed seven humanoid robots who are now Sophia’s siblings.
Of all the Hanson’s humanoid robot’s Sophia is a most expressive one. Her default mode of expression is “happy”. Besides that, she can render almost 62 facial expressions and gestures. In her television appearance in the shows, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Good Morning Britain” she joked and played “Rock, Paper, Scissors” with the host. All these expressions are controlled through complex integration of hardware, software, and firmware which cannot be replicated. The artificially intelligent software gets constantly evolve in the lab. This makes her express the right emotion. But she definitely knows the meaning of all the expression she can feature. Besides this, she is capable of holding conversations and eye contacts. She completely understands human speech. However, she still cannot express complex emotions like hatred, rage, and jealousy.
With all such capabilities and functionality, her creator believes, she can work alongside humans as she has been designed strategically with human values like wisdom, kindness, and compassion. She can be the best fit for healthcare, customer service, therapy, and education sector. She also expressed the willingness to live and work in empathy with the humans. She wants to use her artificial intelligence to aid humans towards building a better living, through the creations of smart cities.
Accepting her capabilities as human and welcoming her into the world, in October, this year, Saudi Arabia granted her their state citizenship. She is the world’s first ever robot to be conferred with a state citizenship. Alongside this, UNDP, in November, regarded Sophia as “Innovation Champion”. This is also for the first time ever United Nation have conferred such a title to a non – human. Her creation has raised high hopes towards unlocking a better future.
